Eid-al-Adha
Eid Adahi Project
Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa salaam) was asked ‘What is Qurban?’, He answered ‘It is the sunnah of your father Ibrahim (as), for every hair of the Qurbani you will receive a reward from Allah and for every hair in the wool you will receive a reward’. (hadith – Ibn Maja and Tirmidhi).
Qurbani (sacrifice) is thus the only deed which is assured of acceptance before it is completed.
The Qurban/Qurbani (sacrifice) or Adahi (Eid Sacrifice) is one of the great sunnah’s of prophet Ibrahim (as) during the days of Hajj. Qurban is understood as a symbolic sacrifice prophet Ibrahim made of a ram in place of his son Isaac and is an act of worship Muslims all over the world offer for the pleasure of Allah from the morning of the 10th to sunset of the 12th Dhu-Al-Hijjah, the 12th lunar month of the Islamic calendar whereby livestock are slaughtered and distributed for consumption to the poor and friends and relatives of the one making the sacrifice.
Qurbani is widely understood in Islam, Christianity and Judaism alike. Islamic preachers would use the occasion to comment on the fact that Islam is a religion of sacrifice and use this opportunity to remind Muslims of their duty of serving mankind with their time, effort and wealth.
Most schools of fiqh accept that the animal must be sacrificed according to the prohibitions of halal sacrifice and that the animal in question must be a domesticated goat, sheep, cow or camel. Allah says in the Qur’an: ‘It is not their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches him.’ 22:37
